What to include in a first email
- What the organisation does, in a sentence
- The problem, rather than the deliverable you think solves it
- Where the work will appear — print, screen, packaging, signage
- Whether it needs to work in French as well as English
- Your deadline, and what is driving it
- A budget range
On budget: naming a range is not negotiating against yourself. It lets a designer tell you honestly in the first reply whether the scope you want is achievable at the price you have, instead of both parties spending three weeks discovering it is not.
What happens next
- A short call to understand the problem and the constraints
- A written proposal: scope, stages, deliverables, timeline, fee, revision rounds
- If it is agreed, a contract covering copyright assignment and payment schedule
- Discovery begins
If a project is not a good fit, you will be told promptly rather than quoted out of it.
